What is Drawing and Talking therapy?

Drawing and Talking is a safe and gentle therapeutic approach, which provides an effective way for children and adults to process trauma or emotional pain they may be experiencing.

Drawing and Talking is not Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) or intended to be used as a tool to ‘find out’ what is wrong or to fix a problem.

Drawing and Talking also deals with Emotional and Symbolic Expression.

Drawing and Talking therapy for adults

Drawing and Talking provides an effective way for adults to process emotional pain, anxiety or trauma they may be experiencing. Adults are impacted emotionally by many different events. Sometimes we are unable to make sense of how we are feeling and how those feelings are impacting our lives.

Drawing and Talking has been specifically designed as a short term intervention. Some adults find this is enough to support them in their lives, and others find this technique a nice introduction to a longer-term therapy.

“Being brave isn’t the absence of fear. Being brave is having that fear but finding a way through it” – Bear Grylls

What happens in a Drawing and Talking session?

During Drawing and Talking you will work one to one with a trained Drawing and Talking practitioner for 30 minutes, once a week over 12 sessions. Within the sessions, you will draw anything you choose and will be encouraged to talk about feelings using storytelling language to help make sense of your internal world. The technique is intended to allow you to play, by drawing a picture and processing any emotions you are holding internally in a safe and non-confrontational way, working at your own pace.

The sessions remain confidential between you and your practitioner. At the end of each session, your picture will be put into a folder and kept safe until your next session. At the end of the 12 sessions, when your feeling better, the folder is handed back to you for you to keep as you wish.

Once you have completed the 12 sessions you cannot attend any Drawing and Talking sessions for 1 school year(children), 1 calendar year(adults). This is a requirement by Drawing and Talking Ltd.

Drawing and Talking Therapy for children

Children are impacted emotionally by many different events, struggles or traumas. Sometimes they are unable to make sense of their feelings or how they are impacting on their happiness.

We all want children to be happy and to flourish. Your child will work one to one with an adult who is a trained Drawing and Talking practitioner for 30 minutes, once a week for 12 sessions. Within their sessions your child will draw anything they choose and will be encouraged to talk about feelings in a storytelling language.

Practitioners do not interpret the pictures and do not ask direct questions. The technique should not be used to replace other specialist services, (such as CAMHS, Psychotherapy, Art or Play therapy) but can be used as an interim tool whilst waiting to be seen by CAMHS or other professionals and can be used after referral has been completed to compliment external agencies.

Within Drawing and Talking we also deal with Emotional and Symbolic Expression.

In Emotional and Symbolic Expression sessions you will work one to one or in a group (your choice) with an adult who is a trained Drawing and Talking practitioner for 30 minutes, once a week for 6 – 8 sessions. Within your sessions you will focus on two feelings a week.

Learning to communicate our feelings is paramount as we walk along our own paths.
