What is Reiki?

Reiki is commonly referred to as hands-on healing, palm healing, healing hands or energy healing. The most common questions are what is Reiki healing? What is Reiki good for? How does Reiki work? There is energy all around us, the energy maintains and nourishes all living things, us, the earth, and all its products. This energy flows through the earth to bring balance and harmony around us. A Reiki practitioner channels this energy using completely safe, non-invasive, natural healing techniques. Reiki helps develop emotional, mental and spiritual well-being.

The five Reiki Principles

Just for today – do not anger

Just for today – do not worry

Be humble

Be honest in your dealings with people

Be compassionate towards yourself and others

What happens in a Reiki session?

Reiki is administered either laying on a therapy couch, outside on the ground, sitting in a chair, or standing. Whichever is the most comfortable for you. You will remain fully clothed, with the exception of shoes. Hands will be placed on or near your body in a series of positions, in the areas you need healing the most.

This often includes positions such as the head, shoulders, the stomach, and feet. Other positions can be targeted based on your needs such as the back, legs, arms, and anywhere you may feel tension or pain. Each position will be held for three to 10 minutes depending on how much healing is required in each area. Each treatment will usually last for one hour.

Reiki for children

Reiki can be of great benefit to people of all ages, including children. These sessions differ slightly to those for adults. Usually, a session with children will last for 20-30 minutes. Reiki can help children in many ways, such as reducing temper tantrums, anxiety, sleep problems, injuries and many other challenges.

For teenagers’ Reiki can help with stress from exams, hormones, anxiety from bullying, relationship issues and other problems. Reiki equips you with the state of mind to control strong emotions and even help with the stress which comes with a buildup of work.

How do Reiki treatments feel?

Treatments vary from person to person. Some may feel tingling sensations, warmth, see colors and images, others may feel a more emotional effect. A strong feeling of relaxation is predominant, all of which promote a sense of well-being and balance.

Reiki is essentially a stress reliever, it helps you release stored emotions, tension and stress. Focusing and calming the mind helps you understand your emotions and provides solutions to mental and physical problems.

How much Reiki do I need?

This depends on each individual. Some people may only need one session whilst others may need three or more. This is something to be discussed during initial contact.

A treatment plan would be put in place which will be reviewed throughout the process. From the first session you should feel the benefits of Reiki, however, a course of treatments can be more effective and beneficial.

 History of Reiki

Reiki has been around for hundreds of years; it is commonly accepted to have started in the 1800’s. Its current form was first developed in the 1920’s by a Japanese Buddhist called Mikao Usui. Usui reportedly taught over 2,000 people the Reiki method during his lifetime. This practice was then spread throughout the U.S., Hawaii and then Europe. Reiki is now taught and practiced globally, passed from master to student through an ‘Attunement Ceremony’.
